This Wittnauer Geneve 4000 dive watch has lived a life full of adventure. It has a matte black “T SWISS T” signed dial that is in pristine condition, free of any visibly noticeable scratching, tool marks, chipping or defects. The original tritium on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a quick-burst glow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching orange hue. On the wrist and in person the patina could not be more pleasing in my humble opinion. The original stainless steel bezel, which rotates stiffly bidirectionally, has lost most of its black enamel paint. The heavy duty all stainless steel case shows considerable wear, dents and dings. The outside of the case back is stamped “STAINLESS STEEL” with “WITTNAUER WATCH CO INC, “”SWISS” and “C11 KS 4000″ stamped on the inside of the case back. While the crystal shows significant scratching, in my opinion the scratching doesn’t look nearly as pronounced in person as it does in the pictures. But a new crystal is recommended if for no other reason than to bring out the true beauty of the dial and patina. The 17 jewels unadjusted Swiss WITTNAUER WATCH CO. The quickset date function works flawlessly by manually rolling over a new date and then moving the hour hand repeatedly between the 20 and 24 hour marks until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the original “W” signed non-screwdown crown 33 full revolutions, which is excellent for a manual wind, the movement had an impressive power reserve of approximately 41 hours. The crown winds beautifully. Given that this watch is more than 45 years old with a movement that shows no signs of ever having been serviced (there are no visibly noticeable watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back), a full overhaul is recommended. This watch measures approximately 37 mm excluding the crown, approximately 41 mm including the crown and approximately 19 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 9 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10 mm. This watch comes on a lightly used black NATO strap that is in excellent condition. While the movement runs strong and keeps near perfect time, given its vintage nature and considering that the movement shows no signs of ever having been serviced, there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. A full overhaul is recommended to keep this watch running strong. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility. And please study the 12 high magnification pictures carefully as they are part of the description and serve as an accurate representation of the condition of this watch.
